Sameer VidwansвЂ™ film is an inspiring tale of determination, not just on AnandibaiвЂ™s part but her husband GopalraoвЂ™s as well. Though she sees all this as compulsion at first, a sad incident in the coupleвЂ™s life changes things and makes Anandi determined to pursue higher education and become a doctor. At GopalraoвЂ™s insistence, Anandi starts reading books, learning tables and, gradually, English. Despite her parentsвЂ™ initial hesitance, they agree. A staunch opposer of traditions and orthodox beliefs, Gopalrao puts only one condition for accepting the marriage- that he will educate Anandi. While the parents know Gopalrao, a postmaster serving in the British government, to be an eccentric person, they donвЂ™t know that what they call eccentric is in fact GopalraoвЂ™s progressive thoughts. Planning to be wed off in a child marriage to Gopalrao Joshi (Lalit Prabhakar), Anandi (Bhagyashree Milind) is вЂtrainedвЂ™ by her parents to behave as per her to-be husbandвЂ™s wishes. She went on to become the first Indian woman to get a medical degree from the United States of America and is considered to be one of the first female physicians of India. But Anandibai Joshi didnвЂ™t just stop there. So, for a woman to learn to read and write and attend school in the late 1800s itself was a big achievement.
